Regular guests at Long Bay Resort on the Myrtle Beach oceanfront know that the Carolina coast offers many of the spoils associated with a Caribbean island vacation - such as beautiful beaches, warm ocean waters, and sunny days spent soaking up ocean breezes. Now, thanks to a new restaurant in the neighborhood, guests at the resort can also get an authentic taste of Caribbean cuisine during their time on the Grand Strand.
Located just a few blocks inland from the resort in the Northwood Plaza Shopping Center (near The Fresh Market off North Kings Highway), the new Mojitos Bar & Grill features a menu offering Caribbean, Cuban and American fare, along with a laid-back atmosphere and casual environment fitting of a visit to paradise.
To start things off, the Mojitos menu features a range of appetizers with an island feel. For example, the “Bahamas Style” features broiled mushroom caps filled with crabmeat, then sautéed with garlic and topped with a light chipotle sauce. The “Tostones en la Playa” consists of three tostones (twice-fried plantain slices) topped with beef ropa vieja and a fine sliced romaine blend. And the “Majahual” starter features tuna croquettes served with tartar sauce.
For the main course, options range from land fare to seafood and sandwiches. On the land side, the “Cosa Mas Rica” entrée features slow-roasted, shredded pork in a special spiced garlic sauce with onions, all served with yuca al mojo or rice & beans. The “Rico Rico” Caribbean chicken curry features chicken breast coated with a curry-sauce blend, served with rice & beans. And the “Quiero Mas” ropa vieja dish features shredded beef brisket in a white-wine broth with onions, garlic, tomatoes and peppers, all served with rice & beans or salad.
One the seafood side, the “Uy Uy Uy” entrée is a Caribbean shrimp cocktail served with tomato sauce, onions and cilantro, all topped with avocado slices. The “Playa Paraiso” option sees the catch of the day served ceviche-style with a lemon-lime juice marinade, tossed with fresh cilantro, red onions and bell peppers. The “Tequilas Fish” dish sees the catch of the day flamed with tequila, hot butter and Caribbean spices.
Of course, the sandwich menu includes the “Caribbean Classic” Cuban sandwich with sliced ham, sliced roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickle and mustard on a fresh hoagie bun. And the “Puro Sabor” sandwich features shredded, roasted pork with onion, served on a hoagie bun. Each sandwich comes with plantain chips and fries.
For dessert, guests can choose from Jirulo Flan, Abuelita Plantains topped with sweetened condensed milk and mango chunks, and the Jibarito cake of the day.
