Brookgreen Gardens Hosts Holiday Festivals

11/13/2006

Beautiful landscaping, amazing sculptures and exotic wildlife are featured at Brookgreen Gardens this fall. Located between Myrtle Beach and Georgetown in the coastal community of Murrells Inlet on U.S. Highway 17, Brookgreen Gardens boasts 9,200 acres of preserved natural surroundings, with an amazing display of gardens, forested swamps and sandy ridges.

Brookgreen Gardens is a magical place to visit during the holidays with events and festivities for everyone, regardless of age. On Saturday and Sunday, November 4th and 5th, Brookgreen Gardens will host the Camellia Festival, presented by the Grand Strand Camellia Society, with 250 to 300 of the finest camellias in the area on display. The camellias will be shown each day during exhibits scheduled at 1:30 and 3:00 p.m. On Saturday, guests can stay for the new garden tour of the beautiful Arcadia Plantation at 3 p.m.

Brookgreen Gardens is also pleased to present Floral Inspirations: Bringing the Holidays Home, which will open on Thanksgiving Day, November 23. This holiday-themed horticulture exhibit will be held in the Jennewein and Noble galleries and gives guests with a variety of inspirational ideas on how to decorate for the holidays. Be sure to bring a camera to take photos of the vast displays of holiday plants and other natural materials, from wreaths and trees to poinsettias and amaryllis.

From November 18th to January 1st, visitors can vote for their favorites in the People’s Choice Award’s Gingerbread House Competition. Guests are welcome to enter their own gingerbread house with the winner to receive a certificate and a Brookgreen medal. This is fun for all ages and gives everyone the opportunity to test their creative while displaying their holiday spirit.

Brookgreen Garden’s most popular holiday event, Night of 1,000 Candles, has become an annual tradition for locals and visitors to the Grand Strand area. The gardens come alive each December as the thousands of sparkling lights from the live oak trees illuminate the breathtaking garden paths, as the musicians and carolers perform. This year’s performers include pianist and composer Rocky Fretz; Bill Oberst, Jr. who performs a one-man rendition of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol; and Joey Schumann and Gina Starr, playing the uillean pipes and the keyboard. Some of the other performers include Walt Polenski and Edward Robinson, on soprano saxophone and keyboards.

Make a visit to Brookgreen Gardens a holiday tradition in your family and experience the magnificent holiday-themed foliage and festive celebrations that has made visitors smile year after year.
