Second Annual National Benefit to Raise Money to Help Provide Educational Scholarships for Military Families
August 18, 2008, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Myrtle Beach National officials announced today that the nine Myrtle Beach National courses will participate in Patriot Golf Day, the national golf fundraiser to be held over the Labor Day weekend.
From Friday, August 29 through Monday, September 1, golfers across the United States will be asked to donate a minimum of $1 in support of Patriot Golf Day, with all proceeds benefitting the Folds of Honor Foundation, an organization that provides scholarship opportunities to the families of soldiers who have been injured or killed in the line of military duty. In 2007, 3,200 golf facilities nationwide participated in Patriot Golf Day, raising more than $1 million.
Sponsored by TaylorMade-adidas Golf, Patriot Golf Day was started in 2007 by Captain Dan Roone, after he’d finished his second tour of duty in Iraq, An F-16 pilot for the 125th Fighter Squadron of the Oklahoma Air National Guard, and a PGA professional, Roone recognized the tremendous need to provide support to the families of his comrades, killed and injured. Patriot Golf Day events range in organization from a simple $1 addition to greens fees all the way to Patriot Golf Day tournaments and clinics.
“More than 37,000 service members have been killed or wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan, and Patriot Golf Day is a way for patriotic Americans to assist families of those military personnel who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom,” said Rooney, who returned to Iraq for a third tour of duty this summer.
“When we learned about this great benefit, it wasn’t a question of whether or not we would participate, but how much could we do to help,” said Jim Woodring, vice president of golf operations, Myrtle Beach National Company. “We hope that the money raised at our nine Myrtle Beach National golf courses, and across the United States, will positively impact families of servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom.”
