25th Annual Women’s South Carolina Golf Association (WSCGA) Tournament Held At The Dunes Golf And Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C. , May 22-23, 2007

June 1, 2007, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Karen Ferree, of Hilton Head Island, S.C., captured the 2007 Women’s South Carolina Golf Association (WSCGA) Senior Championship with a two-day score of 152 (77-75). The annual 36-hole stroke play tournament was held May 22 – 23 at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C., with a full field of 100 amateur golfers from across the state competing. This was the second WSCGA Senior Championship to be held at The Dunes Club (also in 1962).

With the victory, Ferree, a 1-handicap golfer, recorded her fourth WSCGA Senior Championships since 2001. Helen Aitken, of Hilton Head Island, and former Dunes Club member Susan Harden, now a resident of Beaufort, tied for second place with Aitken capturing the runner-up honors in a one-hole playoff.

“Crowning our Senior Champion at a golf course as prestigious as The Dunes Golf & Beach Club, made the 2007 Tournament one of our most special,” said Inez Long, WSCGA tournament director. “The ladies enjoyed playing The Dunes Club, even thought the difficulty of the course led to higher-than-normal scores. The WSCGA would like to thank the staff of The Dunes Club for hosting such a well-organized tournament.”

”It was a fantastic tournament,” said Ferree. “We battled adverse conditions as an unexpected nor’easter made it an extremely windy day. I’m honored to have won the 2007 Senior Championship at a great ‘Top 100’ course like The Dunes Club.”

The Dunes Club had several members compete in the Senior Championship, including Barbara Williams, Mary Campbell and Betty Christopher who finished second, third and fourth in the fifth flight, respectively.

“Congratulations to Karen Ferre and all of the flight winners who participated in the 2007 Women’s South Carolina Golf Association Senior Championship,” said Dennis Nicholl, Dunes Club head golf professional. “It was an honor to host the event and watch such fierce competition among the golfers. It was great to see our members do well in their flights and to see former Dunes Club member Susan Harden battle for the title.”

The Senior Championship is a two-day stroke play tournament for WSCGA members aged 50 years and older. A non-profit organization founded in 1949, the WSCGA is made up of local Women's Golf Associations throughout the state. Membership has grown from the original 10 clubs to over 150 member associations with more than 14,000 women golfers receiving WSCGA handicaps. Recognized throughout the United States as one of the premiere Women's Golf Associations in the country, WSCGA acts as an arm of the USGA in upholding traditions, policies, and high values in regard to the game of golf.
